Joseph "Jose" PHILPOTT was born on 30 Sep 1773 in Frederick Co., Maryland.
He died on 10 Apr 1860 in Metcalfe Co., Kentucky. He was buried in Asbury Cem.,
Center, Metrcalfe Co., Kentucky.4

After the Revolutionary War he moved to North Carolina with his mother. Early in the
Nineteenth century they moved to Barren County, Kentucky.

Frederick, Kentucky was founded by Jose Philpott in the early 1800's and without doubt
named Frederick for memories of childhood days in Frederick County, Maryland. It is
now called Center. Barren County, Kentucky was created out of Green and Warren
counties in 1799. There may be some confusion here about which county what took
place.

Tradition declares Jose Philpott of Barren Co., Kentucky was a saddle maker. In those
days men and women were as dependant upon transportation by horseback as people of
today are by automobile. Otherwise they went in covered wagons and oxcarts. Therefore
the saddle maker was as great a benefactor in that period of time as the automobile
maufacturer is today.

One source on his marriage to Margaret Marshall spelled his last name Filpot. He
divorced Margaret Marshall in 1825. In that hearing he stated that he had not slept with
his wife for four to five years. It is not certain who the father of children born during that
time is. He was married to Catherine BARTLETT on 22 Mar 1802 in Green Co.,
Kentucky.

Catherine BARTLETT died about 1807.
